Independence traffic court records are divided between the Independence Municipal Court, which handles city ordinance violations, and the Jackson County Circuit Court in the 16th Judicial Circuit, which handles state law traffic charges. This page covers how to find records in both systems, how to pay or contest a ticket, and what the city's court relocation means for your upcoming court date.

For state-level traffic cases filed in the Jackson County Circuit Court (16th Judicial Circuit), use Missouri CaseNet at www.courts.mo.gov/casenet. Enter the last name in all caps followed by a comma and the first name -- TAYLOR, JAMES for example. Filter by Jackson County to find Independence-area state traffic cases. CaseNet has over 45 million records statewide and is free to use. Call (888) 541-4894 for help.
Pay Your Independence Traffic Ticket Online
Independence has a dedicated online payment portal for municipal court cases at municipalonlinepayments.com/independencemo. You can pay by citation number or case number. The portal is available around the clock.
Paying your ticket online means you are pleading guilty to the violation. Once you pay, the case closes and the violation goes on your record. Points may be assessed by the Missouri DOR. If you want to contest the ticket, do not pay -- appear in court on your scheduled date or contact the court at 816-325-7230 to discuss your options before your hearing date passes.
For state traffic fines assessed in Jackson County Circuit Court, use the Missouri Fine Collection Center instead. Online payment is at courts.mo.gov/page.jsp?id=136013. You can also call (573) 522-8504 or mail payment to Fine Collection Center, P.O. Box 236, Jefferson City, MO 65102.
Jackson County Circuit Court -- 16th Judicial Circuit
State traffic charges issued in Independence -- those citing Missouri Revised Statutes rather than city ordinances -- go through the Jackson County Circuit Court, part of the 16th Judicial Circuit. This court handles more serious offenses like DWI, reckless driving, and driving on a suspended license, as well as state speeding violations.
Search Jackson County circuit court traffic cases on CaseNet at www.courts.mo.gov/casenet. Use LAST, FIRST format and filter by Jackson County. Results show charges, case status, hearing dates, and fine amounts. CaseNet is updated within a few business days of new filings. If you need physical copies of court documents, contact the Jackson County Circuit Clerk for copy fees and request procedures.
Missouri Driver Points and License Suspension
Missouri tracks your driving behavior through a point system managed by the Department of Revenue. Each traffic conviction adds points to your record. Independence convictions -- in either municipal or circuit court -- count toward your statewide point total. The key thresholds:
- 4 points in 12 months -- advisory letter from the DOR
- 8 or more points in 18 months -- license suspension
- 12 or more points in 12 months -- 1-year revocation
A DWI adds 8 points at once. Speeding usually adds 2 or 3. Check your current point total by ordering your driving record at dor.mo.gov/driver-license/resources/records.html for $2.82. DOR phone: (573) 526-2407. The full points FAQ is at dor.mo.gov/faq/driver-license/tickets-points.html.
Failure to Appear in Independence
Missing a court date in Independence -- whether in municipal court or Jackson County Circuit Court -- can trigger a bench warrant and a license suspension. The Missouri DOR uses the Non-Resident Violator Compact to suspend your driving privileges until you resolve the underlying case. A $20 reinstatement fee applies after you clear the matter.
If you have missed a court date, call Independence Municipal Court at 816-325-7230 (Mon-Thu only) to find out what you owe and what steps to take. For Jackson County Circuit Court cases, contact the circuit clerk. After resolving everything, pay the reinstatement fee through the Missouri DOR. Details at dor.mo.gov/faq/driver-license/fact-nrvc.html. Do not drive on a suspended license -- it adds a new criminal charge.
Accessing Court Records -- Sunshine Law

Your Missouri Driving Record
Your driving record is the official document showing all traffic convictions, points, and license actions on your Missouri license. It is maintained by the Missouri DOR. You can order a copy at dor.mo.gov/driver-license/resources/records.html for $2.82. The record shows all convictions that resulted in points, plus any suspensions or revocations.
Insurance companies, employers, and courts can access driving records too. A clean record keeps your insurance rates down. Multiple violations -- even minor ones -- can add up and eventually lead to a suspension. Check your record periodically, especially if you have received more than one ticket in the past year or two.
